British-Turkish novelist Elif Shafak is the most widely read female author in Turkey and a recipient of numerous literary awards. She has authored seventeen books, eleven of which are novels, in both Turkish and English. Fifty different languages have translations of her writing. Shafak is an honorary fellow of St Anne's College at Oxford University and has taught political science at numerous colleges in Turkey, the US, and the UK. She also holds a PhD in the subject. She is a founding member of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) and a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Creative Economy. Shafak is a passionate supporter of women's rights, LGBT rights, and freedom of speech. She has spoken at TED twice as a global speaker. being praised while standing.
